The Courtesan Parade

Yoshiwara (吉原), a yukaku (遊郭 / brothel district) officially recognised by the shogunate, was established in the Edo period. It was the most enjoyable place in Edo and had a major influence on Edo culture. At the heart of the town were the yujo (遊女 / prostitutes). According to one theory, as many as 2,000 to 3,000 yujo were held in Yoshiwara. Oiran (花魁 / courtesans), the highest rank among prostitutes, were not just prostitutes, but also high-class women who entertained customers with their culture and artistic talents.

花魁道中 (Oiran Dochu) was a spectacular procession of oiran (courtesans) as they made their way to their guests. This was not mere transportation, but a kind of performance, one that entertained the audience.

I expressed the scene using many colorful fruits and flowers, it’s beautiful though, leave a dirty animalic trace on your skin.

The morning after Marie-Antoinette’s big party - the royal gardener tends to the flowers and the aftermath in the Petit Trianon. ānti depicts the scent of ingénue lilies bathing in champagne buckets, and the sharpness of freshly-cut grass. An ode to the care-free decadence, and evanescent memories of last night’s soirée.

“Working with green notes requires delicacy, as they can quickly turn too aggressive. I had to surround them within an entire floral ensemble that I wanted very spring-like. Magnolia essence proves perfect for this - fresh and luminous. It shares with honeysuckle a gentle floral note that oscillates between bergamot, lavender, and basil. The other challenge with green lies in making it persist throughout the perfume’s entire evolution. Here, I extended the lentisk’s green note with galbanum resinoid and especially a nettle absolute that recently joined my palette. Its intense, vegetal note gives this perfume its unique signature trail” - Marc Antoine Corticchiato
